Jensen used his trees to write a short answer to the question 'Make comparisons between the characters of Jack and Ralph, including their leadership styles.'
Here is Jensen's answer:
Ralph and Jack are similar because they both want to be leaders and they are both clever. They have similar backgrounds and similar experiences before landing on the island. This should mean that when they got there they should have both worked with each other because they would have had some better ideas as a team, and would have shared similar feelings on things.
However, they are different because Ralph is caring and listens to other people’s ideas also Ralph thinks about other people, but Jack is very selfish and doesn’t listen to anyone and he’s a bully. The main difference is that Jack wants to be a leader to get power, but Ralph wants to be a leader to make sure other people are safe. This difference makes it hard for them to work together.
The moment when Jack shows his leadership style is when he hits Piggy. This is selfish because he broke Piggy’s glasses and Piggy can’t see without them. Also, they use Piggy’s glasses to light the fire. Jack broke one side of them which is very selfish because they wouldn’t be able to eat without them and will not be able to light the fire for warmth. Ralph shows his leadership when he built huts on the beach so it shows that he’s caring because he doesn’t want the other boys to be cold and he wants to give them civilisation. Ralph wants to lead to look after others but Jack wants to lead just for the power.
